My comb technique was making my fades look choppy

For years, I held my comb flat against the head when blending out a fade. I thought it gave me more control. Then I watched a video from a barber in Chicago, and he kept saying 'comb through, don't comb at.' He held the comb at an angle, letting the teeth glide through the hair to lift it, not press it down. I tried it on my next client, and the guideline just disappeared so much smoother. The blend went from a visible line to a soft transition in half the time. I was basically fighting the hair's natural fall before. Now I use that angled comb method on every skin fade. Has anyone else had a simple tool change make that big of a difference?

Comb through, don't comb at" is exactly it. I used to press down too hard with my clipper comb and it left lines. Letting it just ride through the hair made everything so much faster.

Learned that the hard way too when I kept gouging my fade.
