Unpopular opinion: Starting hot peppers from seed in a tiny space is pure torture

I put the seeds in pots back in early spring, thinking I'd have a crop by midsummer. They took forever to even peek out of the soil. Now it's late season and the plants are still only a few inches tall. I'm starting to think I should have just bought starter plants.
