Warning: galvanized waterers in full sun almost cooked my flock in Tucson

Everyone on here pushes metal waterers because they last forever, but I lost two hens one July afternoon in Tucson when the galvanized can sat in direct sun and the water hit 118 degrees by 3pm. I switched every bird over to a plain plastic bucket in the shade after that, even though half this forum says plastic is junk that cracks by year two. I would rather replace a $6 bucket every spring than come home to dead birds again. Has anyone else in a hot climate had this happen, or am I the only one who learned it the hard way?
