The 4 square foot rule for coops is way too small and I learned it the hard way

I used to repeat the whole 4 square feet per bird thing to anyone who would listen, like it was gospel. Then last spring I squeezed 8 hens into a 32 square foot coop here in Roanoke and by July I had two with bare backs from over mating and one with a nasty respiratory thing. My neighbor who has kept birds for 30 years just shook his head and told me the 4 foot number comes from factory farm minimums, not backyard flocks. So I measured my actual run and coop footprint and realized my girls had less usable space than a battery cage hen once you subtract feeder and nest box areas. I bumped it up to 10 square feet per bird inside and 15 in the run, and the pecking stopped within about two weeks. The poop smell went away too, which I did not expect at all. So my question is, who else ditched the 4 foot rule and what number actually worked for your flock?
