Water filter shortcut saved my trip in the Smokies last fall
I was doing the 70 mile loop near Gatlinburg and my squeeze bag split on day two. I tried taping it but that just leaked dirty water everywhere. Then I remembered I packed a spare sports cap from an old bottle, so I screwed it onto the dirty bag and backwashed the filter with the clean bottle. Worked perfectly for the next five days. Has anyone else rigged a replacement cap or do you carry a backup bag as standard?

and honestly I think you got lucky more than anything. Backwashing with a dirty bag means you were pushing contaminated water through the filter media, and for five days that's just asking for a gut bomb. Ive seen folks skip the backup cap and just carry a second squeeze bag, costs less than a repair kit and saves you from trusting a janky fix. Tape never holds on wet gear anyway, so the real lesson is dont cheap out on the bag in the first place.
