Warning: I went with the Gossamer Gear Mariposa over the Osprey Exos for the Collegiate Loop and now I'm second guessing

I did 78 miles on the Collegiate Loop last July with the Mariposa and my shoulders were killing me by day 3, but my buddy swears his Exos carried 30 pounds way smoother. Am I just packing it wrong or did I pick the wrong pack for that kind of trip? Anyone else done the Collegiate and have thoughts on which one wins?
