Rant: a guy at the REI in Denver said I was "collecting routes like stamps" and it's been bugging me for a week
Last Thursday I was in the Denver REI returning a bear can and the guy at the counter asked where I'd been. I pulled out my phone to show him my map pins and he kind of laughed and said I was collecting routes like stamps. At first I got defensive because I've done 14 trips in the last two years and I'm proud of that. But he wasn't being mean, he just asked how many of those trips I'd actually do again. I sat in my truck for like 20 minutes and counted. Maybe 3. The rest were just checking a box so I could post photos or feel like I was keeping up with people who hike way more than me. The weird part is I can barely remember details from half of them, but I can tell you everything about the 3 I'd repeat. So now I'm wondering if I should just delete my whole pin list and start over with places I actually want to see twice. Has anyone else caught themselves doing this, and did you change how you pick where to go?
Plenty of people do the pin collection thing and still get something real out of it. The box checking is what gets you the experience to know which 3 you'd go back to, and a lot of those 11 "forgettable" trips probably taught you gear stuff, weather stuff, or just what you don't like, even if the memory faded. Three out of fourteen is not a bad hit rate at all for finding places that stick. Deleting the list sounds like throwing out the map that got you to the good spots.
