Met a guy on the PCT who carried a cast iron pan the whole way
He swore it was worth the extra 4 pounds for making meals feel like home. I was carrying a titanium pot and felt like I was missing some deeper connection to the trail. Anyone else run into someone with a crazy luxury item that actually made sense to them?

Bet it made him slow down and cook real meals instead of scarfing down cold ramen. Four pounds is a lot, but I've seen folks carry guitars and full pillows for that same homestyle comfort. If it kept him happy on the trail, more power to him.

Yeah but here's what I always wonder with stuff like that @brookebailey. Think he actually washed that thing properly? I've seen people try to clean cast iron on trail with just water and a bandana and it ends up a rusty mess by week two. Four pounds is a LOT especially on the PCT where every ounce gets felt on those endless switchbacks. Did he at least cut the handle off or something to shave a little weight? Or was he one of those people who just accepted the burden because the ritual of cooking with it mattered more than their knees?
