I thought the rope and carabiner bear hang was overkill until the Winds River trip
I laughed at my buddy for hauling 50 feet of paracord and a carabiner up to Titcomb Basin last August while I just tied my food bag to a low branch. Woke up at 2am to a black bear dragging my bag down the trail and had to chase it off with a rock. Now I'm the guy doing the PCT hang every night, but is the 6 foot minimum off the trunk really enough or do you go higher?
Bears in the Winds are basically pros at this point after years of campers leaving food around. The 6 foot rule is a bare minimum for black bears but a determined one can still swipe at it, and you clearly already met one that was not messing around. Do the extra 2 or 3 feet if the branch lets you, because the only reason anyone ever gets lazy about this stuff is that nothing bad has happened to them yet.
