Took the $40 Harbor Freight jack over the $280 name brand, almost lost my bumper
Needed to lift my 2011 Civic to swap the alternator last Tuesday, and between the cheap Pittsburgh jack on sale and the expensive aluminum one, I figured a jack is a jack, right? Wrong. The first pump went fine but on the second ratchet it just sank back down with the car still half up. I caught it before it fully dropped and threw the spare wheel under as a quick stop, but man that was close. Has anyone else had a bad experience trusting budget jacks for a real lift, or did I just get a dud off the line?

Learned this same lesson with cheap tools in general, the ones that have the one job of keeping you safe are the worst place to save money. A jack that fails just means you're out forty bucks, but a jack that fails while you're under the car means something way worse, and you can't really tell which one you got until it's already holding your weight. Spend the extra cash on the thing standing between you and the ground, every time.
