My neighbor said to just swap the alternator on my 2006 Corolla, and $180 later it still won't start
He has been fixing cars in his driveway on Elm Street for 15 years so I figured he knew what he was talking about, and I pulled the old alternator, took it to the parts store on a Tuesday, and dropped $180 on a reman unit. Put it in, turned the key, and got the same slow crank and click I had before, so now the battery is on a charger and I am out the cash plus a Saturday. Should I have tested the battery and cables first instead of trusting the first guy who sounded sure of himself?
The click plus slow crank is almost always battery or cables, not the alternator. The alternator only charges the battery while the car runs, so a dead battery will not magically start the car once you bolt on a new one. That $180 would have been better spent on a $20 multimeter and ten minutes at the battery posts.
