A dispatcher in Ohio spent 20 minutes schooling me on open vs enclosed transport
I was booking a move for my dad's old Crown Vic from Columbus to Phoenix and kept going back and forth on price quotes. This one dispatcher, Rick was his name, finally just called me and said 'look, you're asking the wrong question.' He laid out how open carriers deal with rock chips and road grime but also how the drivers inspect every car at pickup and dropoff. Then he told me about a covered trailer that got rear-ended near Indianapolis last spring, and the car inside was fine. I had never once thought about the route being a factor. He asked where the car was starting and ending, and that changed the number entirely because of the mountain passes. I ended up going with open because my dad's car is a beater anyway, but I walked away realizing that comparing quotes without route context is useless. Has anyone else had a carrier rep actually break down their own pricing logic like that?
