Warning: my $15 car cover did more damage than the hail it was supposed to block
I grabbed a cheap universal cover at a gas station outside Dallas last spring to protect my hood from hail, and when I pulled it off after a storm I saw scratches all over the paint from grit trapped underneath. A guy at the body shop on Lamar said covers can trap dirt and sand that grind against the clear coat every time the wind moves them, and a loose fit is the worst. So now I'm wondering if a tighter fit or a soft lining actually fixes this, or if I should just skip covers and park under something?
