Serious question, I finally bought a smoke machine and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long
For about 3 years I chased EVAP leaks with a scan tool and my nose, and last month I dropped $140 on a decent smoke machine after a P0455 on a customer's 2011 Escape ate half my afternoon. Found the leak at the filler neck in under 10 minutes, and I just sat there feeling dumb about all the time I burned before. I used to think they were a gimmick for shops with money to throw around, but the hose and the little cap set alone paid me back on that one ticket. How do you all handle the guys who still swear by the soapy water spray bottle?
Man, soapy water has its place but not when you're chasing a leak in a tight spot. I've done the spray bottle thing for years and it works fine on a big obvious hose crack you can see. But a pinhole on top of a tank or something tucked behind a shield? You're just wasting soap and time. Smoke finds it in seconds and you can actually see where it's coming from. Your mileage may vary, but I'm with you on this one.
