Getting stopped for car advice in public, good neighbor move or bad practice?

I was filling up my truck when a woman pointed to her engine and asked what a clicking sound meant. I leaned in and said it might be a loose belt, but I didn't have my tools. Now I'm torn between the urge to assist and the risk of giving off the cuff fixes. One view is that sharing knowledge helps everyone, but another is that it blurs the line between casual chat and real service. How do you all handle these situations?

Push back on that overthinking. Someone asks for basic car help, you give a simple opinion if you have one. Calling that "blurring lines" is making a friendly act into something weird. They're adults who can take your guess and still go to a mechanic.

Exactly! I once helped with a wobbly tire.
