I blew him off for probably two seasons and just kept snapping away with my DSLR, wondering why my shots of Orion always came out like gray mush. Then one cold night in November I finally sat down with that battered chart and spent about an hour just tracing Betelgeuse and Rigel with my eyes, and suddenly I could actually find things in the viewfinder without hunting around. Now I still use the chart before every session, even though I have apps on my phone that do the same job faster. The old paper version just sticks in my head better, weird as that sounds. Anyone else find that going low tech first made their actual astrophotos better?
