My tripod gave out at 11 PM near the observatory overlook

I was set up at Cherry Springs last month, doing a 30 second exposure of the Milky Way core with my old aluminum tripod. Right in the middle of the shot, one leg buckled and the whole rig tipped over into the gravel. The camera body took a hit but the lens somehow survived, just needed a good cleaning. I now check the leg locks on every tripod I use before heading out, even the newer carbon ones. Has anyone else had a setup fail at the worst possible moment during a long exposure?
