TIL that old wives tale about putting a penny in a vase of flowers actually works

My grandma swore by it for years and I always rolled my eyes. Last month my tulips were drooping after 2 days so I tossed a 1982 penny in the water out of desperation. They perked up and lasted a full 9 days. Anyone else had random grandma hacks turn out to be legit?

That penny trick is just confirmation bias. Your flowers were probably already dying and you just happened to catch them at the right time. Copper doesn't do anything special for flowers, it's more likely you just changed the water or trimmed the stems without realizing it.

OMG right??? I was the same way with my grandma's tricks. She always said to put a rusty nail in with hydrangeas to turn them blue and I thought she was crazy. Tried it last summer with some white hydrangeas from my yard and they literally turned a soft lavender color in like two days lmao. Also she told me to crush up an aspirin in the water for cut roses and I swear they lasted almost two weeks. I think some of that old school knowledge actually has real science behind it, even if we don't totally get why.
