Vent: peer review made me trash my favorite dig notebook method

I used to log every artifact on graph paper with colored pencils because my field school taught us that way. Last month a reviewer at the Midwest Archaeology Conference called it "needlessly artsy" and said my stratigraphy notes were borderline unreadable. I spent 40 hours converting everything to a simple Excel template with depth markers and photos, showing my work to two colleagues who actually dig in the field. Now I can sort finds by unit and date in minutes instead of flipping through 12 pages of scribbles. Has anyone else had to abandon a pretty system for one that makes data sharing easier, or am I the only one who fought this for years?
