My big mistake trying to map a site with just a phone camera
Last fall, I tried to record a small surface scatter of pottery shards near my town using only my phone's camera and a basic grid I drew in my notebook. It was a total mess, and I couldn't line up the photos right at all. This spring, I borrowed a friend's simple DSLR and a tripod, and the difference was huge. The clear, steady photos let me actually see the patterns in where things were found. Has anyone else had a simple tool change make your recording way better?

Wasn't it crazy how we all thought phone cameras were good enough for everything? I used to try and take pics of finds with my phone for notes, and they were always blurry or the light was wrong. Borrowing a real camera on a tripod last year was a total game changer for me too, it made my records actually useful. What kind of patterns did you start to see with the better photos?

My friend runs a vintage Etsy shop and her sales doubled when she switched from phone pics to a basic DSLR. You start seeing the tiny cracks in pottery, the real color of old fabric, the way light hits a carved wood detail. It's like your eyes finally get the right tool to do their job. Now I notice how many online listings are just bad photos hiding good stuff, or good photos hiding flaws. Makes you question everything you see on a screen.
