Got a stubborn pottery shard to fit using a trick from an old field guide

I was trying to piece together a broken vessel from a dig site in New Mexico, and one piece just wouldn't sit right (it was driving me nuts). I remembered a note in a 1980s field manual about using a tiny bit of water-based clay as a temporary filler to check alignment. I tried it, and it held the fragment in place just long enough to see the original shape. Has anyone else used a similar low-tech method for tricky reconstructions?

1980s field manual" sounds a bit off, don't those usually get updated?

Right? Makes you wonder what else they're using that's super outdated. Kinda worrying.
