Update: the 60 foot sugar maple in Burlington I've been watching since 2021 finally dropped its big dead limb, and it missed the fence by about 2 feet
Been telling the homeowner for two seasons that the codominant stem had a crack running maybe 8 inches down the seam, and last Thursday's wind finally took it, landed right between the shed and the property line. I know we all get tired of being the guy who says 'it needs to come down' but this one made me feel a lot less crazy, has anyone else had a client finally listen after a close call like that?
How many times did you have to bite your tongue before that limb came down? I had a similar one two years back, a big silver maple with a co-dominant leader right over a client's driveway. I kept a log of every visit, wrote down the crack measurements, even took photos with a date stamp. When a storm finally split it and it landed on their car, not a person, they called me that night. The written notes saved me from any blame and honestly made the next three clients take my warnings serious when I could show them real proof instead of just saying it looked bad. Paper trail beats nagging every single time.
