The old climber at the Salem job told me to stop spurring up trim jobs and I blew him off
About 5 months back I was on a big removal job outside Salem and this climber named Ray, probably 30 years in the trade, watched me spike my way up a 40 foot maple we were just deadwooding. He didn't yell or anything, just waited till I was down and said 'you're wounding trees we're supposed to be helping.' I shrugged it off because spurring is faster and I had 6 more trees on the list that day. Two months later I drove past that same property and every single spur mark on that maple had a dark streak running down the bark, like the tree never healed right. Ray was right and it bugged me for weeks. Now I climb on a rope and a throwline even on little trim jobs, which adds maybe 20 minutes but the bark stays clean. What finally got me was watching him work, he never once touched a spur to a tree he wasn't removing. Has anyone else had an old timer call them out like that and it took forever to sink in?
