The day a black walnut tree fought back

Last Tuesday I was pruning a big black walnut on a property in Oakville. I hit a branch that was under way more tension than I expected and it whipped back, knocking my helmet clean off and leaving a gash on my arm. Took me a full 10 minutes to stop the bleeding with my first aid kit. Has anyone else had a tree just surprise you like that with a hidden hazard?

Oh come on, are you sure you needed 10 minutes to stop a gash on your arm? I've had worse from a bad cat scratch and a bandaid did the job. Helmets are meant to take a hit, so unless your head was rattled too, it sounds like a standard day of tree work to me.

Brian, you sound like the kind of guy who'd patch a chainsaw bite with duct tape and call it a day.
