Overheard a utility forester say tree rings lie about age in urban soils

Last Thursday I was chipping a big pin oak in Cincinnati and the forester on site said urban trees grow faster in the first 20 years but ring widths drop way harder once the soil compacts, has anyone else seen growth patterns that don't match what the textbooks say?
