Old timer taught me to read the bark, not the app

Back in 2011 I was doing a removal in Portland and this 70 year old guy watched me for a bit, then said 'that oak's been telling you where to cut since you parked the truck.' He showed me a 3 inch crack I'd walked right past, saved me from a bad hinge. Anyone else had a stranger's two cents beat five years of formal training?
