My old boss in Denver always said to never top a maple, and I finally saw why.

I ignored him on a job last fall and the tree sent up a dozen weak watersprouts by spring. Anyone else have a 'bad advice' story that cost you later?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I made that same mistake on a client's silver maple and ended up with a total mess, just like christopher493 said. What finally worked for me was carefully cutting out all those sprouts and doing proper thinning cuts on the branches that were left. It took two seasons of follow-up pruning to get it looking decent again.

Yeah, that's a lesson you only need to learn once. Now you've got a tree that looks like it's having a bad hair day.
