Had to choose between a $150 part or a $2 gasket on a 20 year old dryer
The customer wanted the whole drum assembly replaced, but the noise was just the rear felt seal crumbling. I went with the gasket, and the thing runs silent now. Anyone ever talk a customer down from a big fix to a simple one?

My crew still ribs me about the time I almost replaced a whole water heater for a ten-cent washer.

Okay but "almost replaced a whole water heater" is a pretty big deal. That's a major job. How did you not catch that first? I mean, you have to drain the thing and disconnect all the lines. At some point pulling the old one out, didn't you stop and double check the actual leak? Seems like a huge step to skip over the easiest fix.
