A customer in Toledo called me out on my lazy diagnostic habit

Last month I was checking a noisy washing machine and just went straight for the motor brushes. The homeowner, an older guy who used to work on industrial motors, stopped me and said, 'Son, you didn't even listen to the bearings spin free.' He was right, I was skipping a basic step. Now I force myself to run through a full 5-point check on every spin cycle complaint before I touch a tool. Has anyone else had a simple comment from a client totally shift their routine?

Yeah that's a good point. I used to always assume belt tension was the culprit on any weird dryer noise. Then a customer asked if I'd checked the idler pulley for a flat spot before I even got my wrench out. Felt pretty dumb because it was a two second check I was skipping. Now that's step one on my list, no matter what. Makes you realize how easy it is to get into a lazy routine.

A regular at the diner pointed out my sloppy knife grip, and now I check my form every single shift.
