Vent: my roommate called my compost bin a "dirt smoothie" and honestly she was right
I keep a 5-gallon bucket with a lid under our sink in our Chicago apartment, and I was so proud of it for about 3 weeks. Then last Tuesday my roommate opened it, took one look at the brown sludge inside, and said it looked like a dirt smoothie nobody ordered. The real problem was I never drained the liquid, so the whole thing smelled like a wet gym sock and fruit flies were throwing parties in there. I dumped it, drilled a few holes in the bottom, and started adding dry shredded paper every single time I toss in banana peels. Now it smells like nothing and the worms in my little bin are actually happy, has anyone else had to learn the drainage lesson the gross way?
