I thought indoor composting would always smell, but moisture is the real test

I was sure my kitchen would stink if I started composting inside. After a few weeks, I learned that keeping the bin dry matters more than anything. What surprised you when you began composting in a small space?

Wait, so it's not supposed to smell like a swamp monster moved in?

Leo's swamp monster comment hits home. My first attempt had a similar vibe when I added leftover pasta and forgot about it. The lid came off to a fuzzy, wet mess that definitely breathed. Getting the moisture right changed everything for me. A handful of shredded paper or dry leaves when things look wet keeps it from turning into a science project.
