Watched a $40 brass lamp go green in 3 days after a "quick polish"
Found a solid brass desk lamp at a flea market in Lawrence for $40, nice weight, no dents, original cord. I wiped it down with a cheap polish from the hardware store and it looked great that night. Three days later the whole base had a chalky green film and the nice dark patina in the grooves was gone. Turns out that stuff strips the old finish and leaves bare brass to oxidize fast, and I paid $40 to ruin a lamp worth more with the age left on it. Has anyone found a cleaner that takes off grime without eating the patina?
