Just realized the $18 lamp I bought in Salem has a fake brass base, and I only found out because a magnet stuck to it
Bought it at a flea market off Highway 22 about two weeks ago. The lady there swore up and down it was solid brass from the 40s, and I handed over the cash without even tapping it. Got it home, set it on my side table, and a fridge magnet on the shade fell off and stuck right to the foot. So now I have a lamp that looks nice but I have no clue what it actually is. Does anybody know a quick way to tell real brass from plated stuff without wrecking the finish?
