Swore the 1892 map of Ellis County was mislabeled, then I found the courthouse
I picked up a reprint of an 1892 plat book for Ellis County, Kansas at a flea market in Hays for $4 and almost tossed it when a creek near my grandma's old farm showed up a full mile east of where it runs today. I figured the printer just messed up the plate, but then I compared it to a 1911 soil survey and a railroad right of way map, and sure enough the creek really did get straightened when they dug the drainage ditch in 1908. Has anyone else run into a map that looked flat out wrong until you checked a later government survey? I'm trying to figure out how many of these old plat books have the same kind of hidden story.
