Just found a town on my 1892 Pennsylvania atlas that doesn't exist anymore, and the county clerk's advice actually worked
I've been stuck on this one page of an 1892 atlas of Pennsylvania for about three weeks now. There's a little dot labeled "Somerset Junction" sitting between two rail lines, and no modern map shows anything there, so I figured the name got changed somewhere along the way. I asked at my local library and the woman at the desk told me to quit hunting online and call the county historical society directly, which honestly felt like a waste of a morning. I gave it a shot anyway and got a retired clerk on the phone who knew exactly what I was talking about. He said the place was a rail stop that got swallowed up when the line rerouted in 1908, and the handful of families there just drifted to the next town over. He even read me a line from a 1911 plat book showing the lots still drawn in but marked vacant. I never would have gotten that from a search engine. Now I'm wondering how many other dots on this map are ghost towns, and if anyone here has a trick for spotting abandoned rail stops before you start calling around.
