I thought the map dealer at the Portland antique show was pulling my leg about a 1590s atlas page
Three summers ago I paid $50 for a single page from what he called a 1590s Ortelius atlas, mostly because the paper looked old and I liked the little sea monsters near Iceland. I figured it was a souvenir reprint, but a guy at the library map room let me compare it under a loupe to their facsimile and the chain lines and watermark lined up with the real thing from around 1592. Has anyone else bought a cheap map page on a hunch and had it turn out to be the real deal?
