My buddy told me to skip the filler in Naruto Shippuden. I did. Now I'm totally lost on some characters.

Yeah, skipping filler is one thing, but your buddy gave you bad advice. A lot of those episodes have small character moments or backstories that actually matter. You probably missed stuff like the Anbu's past or why certain side characters act the way they do. It's no wonder you're lost, you cut out chunks of the show.
