Found out my panel's battery backup was dead for 2 years after a brownout

Went to clean up a 20 year old DSC system in a rental unit near Fort Worth last week and the homeowner mentioned the keypad kept beeping after a storm. I pulled the battery and it was swollen with a 2016 date stamp, the panel had been running on wall power the whole time. That little 7 amp hour battery was supposed to be swapped every 3 to 5 years per the manual, but nobody had touched it since install. Anyone else finding old SLA batteries that are way past their rated life in panels they service?
