Showerthought: the old timer at the hangar in Reno who told me I torque like I'm afraid of the wrench
He watched me run a wing bolt to spec on a Cessna 172 last spring at a shop off Rock Blvd. I was creeping up on the click, backing off, checking my wrench twice. He took it out of my hand, set it, and said 'the spec is the spec, either you trust the tool or you don't.' Then he made me do the next six while he stood there not saying a word. Couple of them I know I stopped short because I didn't want to overdo it. He didn't yell, just pointed at my hand and said it again. Took me a while to figure out he wasn't talking about the wrench at all. You can't be half in on a torque value, same as you can't be half in on signing the logbook. I still hear that when my hand hesitates. Anybody else have an old timer plant something in your head like that?
