Was sure those AI voice cloning tools were just a gimmick until my buddy used one to record his grandfather's stories last week.
He got 6 hours of old family history captured in the old man's actual voice before he passed, and now I'm actually looking at ElevenLabs for my own dad's stories - anyone else find a real use for this stuff that changed your mind?

Was sure those AI voice cloning tools were just a gimmick" - yeah I felt the same way honestly. But you gotta be careful with the wording there, it's not really "cloning" a voice in the sci-fi sense, its more like making a really good copy based on recordings they feed it. My buddy did something similar with his grandma's old home videos, took a few hours of her talking and the AI could make her say new stuff that sounded just like her. Its wild how accurate it gets but you need good source material or it sounds robotic. I messed around with one for my own dad's stories about growing up in the 60s and the first couple tries came out kinda flat until I gave it more clips of him laughing and telling jokes. Now I'm actually thinking of doing a whole collection for my kids someday.

That emotional range matters more than people realize. A flat recording of someone reading a script just doesn't capture their real personality. Ever tried adding laughter or frustration clips to yours?
