Debate: Should AI art be labeled as AI-generated at the point of creation?

I was comparing two AI image generators last week, one that adds a visible watermark and one that doesn't. The unmarked one feels more polished but it also makes me wonder if people are passing off AI work as their own. Do you think mandatory AI labels would help or just hurt the creative process?

Labels feel like the bare minimum to me. Think of it like ingredients on food - nobody's forcing you to read them, but they're there for people who need to know what they're dealing with. The watermark approach does something similar but also kills the illusion for people trying to pass off generated stuff as hand-crafted work. The real problem nobody talks about is that mandatory labels give false security. Someone determined to lie will just crop out the label or run the image through another filter to hide it. Might be better to focus on teaching people how to spot AI tells instead of making creators put a sticker on everything.

I was reading an article the other day that said some AI detectors can be fooled pretty easily by just changing a few pixels. It made me wonder if all these labeling rules are mostly just making people feel better rather than actually solving the problem.
