Linda626 makes a point about speed, but skipping harnesses is how people get killed (seen it happen). That 'clunky strap system' saves lives when balance fails, even for experienced guys. A fall from height doesn't care about your years on the job, and the cost is way more than lost time. I've heard stories of guys who thought they were fine until one slip changed everything.
