Bought a $30 silnylon tarp that leaked like a sieve, then learned the real deal

I grabbed a supposedly waterproof tarp off Craigslist in Portland and got soaked on my first trip out near Mount Hood. Turns out the previous owner had treated it with the wrong spray, which wrecked the coating. Has anyone else gotten burned by mystery gear that looked fine but had hidden chemical damage?
