Vent: $80 pressure regulator install went sideways because my pipe was seized
I tried swapping out a bad water pressure regulator in my basement last Saturday in Austin, Texas. The old one looked fine but water was hammering every time the washing machine cycled. I watched three videos and felt ready, but the main shutoff valve wouldn't turn all the way, so water kept trickling out while I worked. After an hour of wrestling, I snapped a pipe wrench handle clean in half and had to call a local plumber at 7 PM on a weekend. He charged $180 for an emergency visit and had it done in 20 minutes with a torch and a specialty tool I never knew existed. Has anyone else hit a seized valve that made a simple job turn into a nightmare, and what did you use to break it free?
