My wife and I are looking to get pre-approved. We bank with Amegy so we thought about using them to keep things simple, but our agent strongly suggested Champions Mortgage. Which one is better to go with right now in 2026?

Listen to your agent! We used them and they were fantastic. If you need help with closing costs, they are experts at houston down payment assistance. Made a huge difference for our budget and we didn't have to drain our savings.

Banks are notoriously slow for mortgages. Amegy is fine for checking accounts, but use a dedicated broker for your house. They have access to way more loan products.
