TIL my first boss used to temper glass in a coal fired kiln

He showed me pics from the 80s of this huge, smoky setup in his backyard shed. Now we just order pre tempered units from the factory with a spec sheet. It's wild to think how much of the process we don't see anymore. I guess it's more consistent now, but there was a real art to watching it happen. Makes you appreciate how the trade keeps changing.

Mixing paint by eye was a whole different skill.

Remember seeing an old timer hand-cut gaskets from sheets of rubber, something you'd never do now. Felt like watching a lost skill.
