That 'easy' selenite tower I tried to polish ended up a crumbly mess on my kitchen floor

Wait, did you actually try to polish a selenite tower? That's like trying to wax a saltine cracker. Selenite is super soft and brittle, it's basically gypsum which is a hardness of 2 on Mohs scale. You can scratch it with your fingernail. So yeah, any kind of polishing with a machine or even a cloth and compound is going to just grind it down into dust. It's a common mistake though because people see "easy to work with" but that means soft not tough. You really can't do much with selenite except wipe it gently with a dry cloth, and even then you have to be careful not to break off little pieces.

Thought I knew what I was doing with selenite but I sure learned the hard way.
