Shoutout to that geologist at Crater Lake who called me out on my hammer swing

He watched me take a swing at a basalt column and said 'you're gonna lose a finger with that form, son'. Changed my whole grip angle that day and I haven't chipped a hammer since... anyone else get schooled by an old timer in the field?

Old timers really know their stuff, don't they... That's a good save on your part though. Got a similar lesson from a guy in the Sierra Nevadas once, told me I was gonna crack the rock in the wrong direction and send shards into my face. He was right, my technique was all off. Still think about that guy whenever I'm setting up for a big swing.

@lisa_ross16 yeah those old timers have a way of sticking with you. Had a guy in the Cascades show me how to read the grain in a stone once. Changed everything about how I approach a cut. Now I always stop and check the rock before I even swing, saved me from a few close calls. Funny how one lesson can just stick and keep you out of trouble years later.
