My rock hammer handle snapped on a shale outcrop near Moab

I was trying to split some shale layers yesterday morning, about 10 miles north of Moab. I gave it a solid whack and the wooden handle just cracked right below the head. I had to finish the job by carefully prying with my chisel, which took forever. Has anyone found a brand of hammer that really holds up to that kind of stress?

What is it with stuff just not being made right anymore? My dad's old tools never broke like that.
