Tried a home rim straighten on my old Schwinn and it went sideways

I had a wobble on my rear wheel and figured I could true it myself with a spoke wrench and a zip tie guide. After about an hour of tiny turns, the wobble got way worse and the wheel started to hop. I learned that you really need a proper truing stand, not just a guess. Has anyone else messed up a wheel trying to fix it without the right gear?

Oh man, I feel your pain. I did the exact same thing with a zip tie and made a total mess. What finally worked for me was flipping the bike over, using the brake pads as a guide, and only ever doing a quarter turn on any spoke at a time. It took forever but I got it close enough to ride. What kind of wobble are you dealing with now, side to side or up and down?

My buddy Dave turned a slight hop into a pretzel trying the same thing last summer.
